TOKYOHow to describe a city as diverse as Tokyo? A pastel colored amourphous foam, constituted out of thousands of microscopic spheres? A vintage Casio watch? A giant retro-futuristic spaceship? Will any metaphor ever do justice to the layerdness and paradoxes of the city? Tokyo offers an abundance of phenomena to be researched on all scales: Infrastructure and architecture, a unique visual culture, popular ‘otaku’ (geek) culture, (image) consumption and an entertainment industry that seems to cater to any possible form of escapism, all set against a backdrop of the ‘darkside’ of Tokyo; an almost unbearable work pressure and a staggering suïcide rate. As in every edition of the Summer Sessions, we will do our best to stay out of Tourist Mode and visit the lesser known, ‘weird’ Tokyo with the help of befriended local creatives. This is a truly unique opportunity to get to know one of the most exciting places in the world from a designer perspective.
WORKSPACESThis edition of the Summer Sessions will be based at Design Koishikawa, a newly-opened project space established as a creative and community hub for Tokyo’s inner-north Bunkyo district, an area with a mix of new and old culture that is currently undergoing regeneration and transformation.
Here, we will work together, hold crits, organize lectures, and build the exhibition of the final results.
Resembling a bizarre artist rendering come-to-life, Design Koishikawa is surrounded by the Tokyo Dome, skyscrapers, an amusement park, and traditional shopping arcades as well as quiet residential streets, Shinto shrines, green parks, and small printing factories – making Koishikawa a quirky yet dynamic gateway to the rest of Tokyo.
